A Nigerian boxer, Helen Joseph was set to face undefeated American, Mikaela Mayerin a 10 round female super-featherweight bout at the MGM Grand, in Las Vegas on 9th June 2020, but the fight will sadly not come on as Mayer has tested positive for the coronavirus for the second time this year.
“I am heartbroken to report that I will no longer be fighting on Tuesday’s Top Rank card due to a positive result in my COVID-19 test yesterday,” Mayer revealed on social media.
“It came as a complete surprise. I am currently asymptomatic and am quarantining at an off-site location per recommended guidelines. The rest of my team tested negative and they are all in good health.” She further stated

Mayer also revealed her disappointment to be unable to participate in the fight even apologising to her opponent Joseph who she revealed worked hard to put on a show.
“I was really looking forward to bringing back boxing for all of you and I’m disappointed for myself, my team, my supporters and for my opponent, Helen Joseph, who worked just as hard to be here this week and put on a show for everyone.”
Mayer’s last fight, scheduled against Melissa Hernandez in March, was also cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic and Mayer’s manager, George Ruiz, revealed that “Top Rank wants to get her back in the ring as soon as possible.”

The other show for the night will still come on including the main event between the US’ Shakur Stevenson against Felix Caraballo of Puerto Rico’s in a non-title fight at junior lightweight.
