Korean Ambassador’s Cup Taekwondo Championships in jeopardy of being cancelled

The 2020 edition of the Ghana Taekwondo Federation’s (GTF) main showpiece the Korean Ambassador’s Cup Taekwondo Championships is in jeopardy of being cancelled due to the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic.

This comes after a meeting between the GTF and the Embassy of the Republic of Korea (the competition’s main sponsor) held yesterday 11th June 2020 revealed that the Korean Government has clamped on all sporting activities and as such would be difficult for the embassy to raise funds for the much-anticipated event.

This was revealed by GTF Public Relations Officier Davis Nii Attuquaye Clottey in an exclusive interview with Talks Africa Media.

“We all know the COVID-19 has affected everything, the economy of many countries has been affected. So the Korean government has also called a halt on sporting activities, so in a way, the ambassador made it clear that it will be difficult to host or organize our yearly flagship tournament which is the Korean Ambassador’s Cup Taekwondo Championships”

The Korean Ambassador, Kim Sungsoo, has however not given up on supporting the federation stating that he will continue to ask the Korean companies and community to support the federation.

“But there are ways, like online Poomsae competition. So, we can think about something like that. Let’s continue to find ways, get rules and others and see how that can be done, because, their health matters. We will find how to support you and also continue to tell the Korean companies and community if they have any room to support taekwondo.”

The GTF had planned to organize this year’s Korean Ambassador’s Cup Taekwondo Championships in July.
