Management of the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) has assured its lifeline customers and stakeholders that it is resolved to implement the Government of Ghana’s (GoG) free electricity initiative.
The free electricity according to ECG will commence today, August 1, 2020.
The free electricity initiative which was announced by President Akuffo Addo during his 13th Update on the measures taken against COVID-19 is to benefit Lifeline Prepaid customers and Lifeline Postpaid customers.
The ECG, in a statement issued on July 31, 2020, and signed by Managing Director, Kwame Agyeman-Budu said lifeline customers on both prepaid and postpaid metering systems “will realise their relief effective August 2020 to January 2021”.
“Following the President of Ghana’s directive, the government if Ghana is to absorb 100 per cent electricity bills for lifeline residential customers who consume between 0-50kWh per month, from now till the end of the year”, the statement.
The statement explained that per the implementation, lifeline prepaid customers on smart prepaid meters will be automatically credited each month with their free lifeline units.
It added that customers on non-smart prepaid meters will have to visit their vending points to recharge in order to receive their free lifeline units for each month.
For lifeline postpaid customers, the statement said, “their bills from August 2020 will indicate the government of Ghana’s absorption of their lifeline consumption”.
The statement concluded that customers are advised to the company’s district offices if they encounter any challenge to be resolved.
