FREEDOM! Patrick Allotey speaks following end of 6 months GBA suspension

Ghanaian Welterweight Patrick Allotey’s [40-4, 30 KOs] six-month Ghana Boxing Authority (GBA) suspension came to an end yesterday 6th August 2020.

The former WBO African Welterweight champion back in February was suspended by the GBA after being found guilty for assaulting Kumasi Asante Kotoko fan Michael Siaw Agyemang during a clash between the Porcupine Warriors and fierce rivals Accra Hearts of Oak at the Accra Sports Stadium in January.

In an interview with ClassFM Allotey has stated that he regrets his actions and advised his fellow boxers not to follow in his footsteps “This can happen to every boxer or every athlete because I have regretted it [the assault], that’s not my intention and it has happened so I take it like that.”

“My advice to them [boxers] is that whenever they are at somewhere and a situation like that is coming their way they should just try and ignore it because if they do not do that and they try to retaliate with the person they will find it difficult like I did.” He further stated

Allotey was caught on camera punching Michael Siaw Agyemang during the country’s ‘El Classico’ between the Porcupine Warriors and the Phobians on Sunday, 26th January 2020 at the Accra Sports Stadium. From the video you could see Kotoko fan Michael Siaw Agyemang, jubilating and waving a flag of the Porcupine Warriors, directing his actions at Allotey who asked him to get away from his sight. Siaw, however, persisted which saw Allotey, lose his cool, as he held Siaw and unleashed some couple of punches on him which eventually left the young man sustaining a deep cut above his left eye. Siaw was immediately rushed to the hospital for treatment.

The GBA would then ban the Accra-based boxer’s professional license for the next 6-months for breaching the Codes of the GBA, and the rules of the sports. The ban ended yesterday 6th August 2020 and the 29-year-old spoke about his future plans following his release.

“With my management, we have been talking about our next coming back because you know I lost with the Mexican fighter [Jaime Munguia] last year and because of this COVID-19 we have not scheduled for any fight.”
