The University of Ghana since its establishment in 1948 has produced a number of students who have contributed their quota in the growth of the country. The world of sports has not been an exception as these “Legonites” have proved beyond doubt that, they are ready to see to the development of the sports industry.
Here is a list of some of these men actively involved in the sports sector.
Kurt Edwin Simon Okraku
Kurt Edwin Simon Okraku is a Ghanaian football administrator who serves as the President of the Ghana Football Association since October 2019. He is a former sports journalist and past Executive Chairman of Dreams Football Club. He also served on various executive committees of the Ghana Football Association as well as the national team, The Blacks Stars. He received his bachelor’s degree from the University of Ghana and then trained as a journalist at the Ghana Institute of Journalism. He received his MBA from the University of Liverpool. While in the UK, he also received instruction in marketing, hospitality and tourism management.
Isaac Kwame Asiamah
The current minister for Youth and sports attended the University of Ghana, Legon where he graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Geography and Political Science, in 2000. In January 2017, He was appointed by President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo Addo as the minister for Youth and Sports. He is tasked to improve sporting disciplines and developing young athletes for the future.
Kwesi Nyantakyi
Kwesi Nyantakyi is a Ghanaian banker and a lawyer and former football administrator. The former football Ghana Football Association president got enrolled into the University of Ghana in 1987 and completed in 1991.He then later went to the law school. Nyantakyi has endeared himself very much to most Ghanaians due to several achievements as a football administrator. In 2012, he was named the thirty-second most influential Ghanaian
David Addo Ashong
The current Ghana Basketball Association President was once a basketball player for the University of Ghana. He represented the school in many competitions. Mr. Addo-Ashong holds an LLB from the University of Ghana, Legon and BL from the Ghana Law School. He is a Member of Ghana Bar Association, the Ghana Olympic Committee and President of the Ghana Basketball Association. David Addo-Ashong is a Partner at Ashong Benjamin & Associates. He previously served as a Partner at Ankamah and Associates and also a Deputy Managing Director at First Atlantic Merchant Bank Limited.
Nana Yaw Amponsah
The Newly appointed Chief Executive Officer of Kumasi Asante Kotoko obtained a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Psychology and Political Science from the University of Ghana.He also holds Master’s Degree in Sports Law and Practices from the Leicester DE Monort University, UK. Before being appointed by the Porcupines warriors, he was the president of Phar Rangers football club. He contested in the just ended Ghana Football Association Presidential elections which eventually saw Kurt Okraku being the victor.
