Vasyl Lomachenko [14-1, 10 KOs] and Teofimo Lopez [15-0, 12 KOs] have now agreed on terms to meet in a mouthwatering unification fight targeted for 17th October 2020.
WBA, WBO and WBC ‘franchise’ lightweight champion Lomachenko will finally get the opportunity to secure the final IBF belt Lopez claimed after knocking out Ghanaian lightweight Richard Commey [29-3, 26 KOs] last December.
Commey had revealed back in June that he was looking forward to returning to the United States of America (USA) and working on reclaiming his lost title, but he will have to wait a bit longer as the Ukrainian ‘Hi-Tech’ will get a shot at it first.
The bout faced some hiccups at first as Lopez was not happy with the $1.2m he was offered but according to reports by The Athletic, Lomachenko has agreed to take less than his initial $3.5million purse ($3.25m) to make the fight happen.
It is reported that Lopez could now earn up to $1.5m“We came to an agreement, It was a complicated deal but we made it. Bob Arum and I have been talking and we finally got it done.” Lopez’s manager David McWater confirmed to BoxingScene.
17th October 2020 is the target date for the fight which is set to take place inside Top Rank’s MGM Grand ‘bubble’ in Las Vegas.
