The University of Ghana branch of the University Teachers Association of Ghana (UTAG) will hold a press conference today, on the contentious Public University Bill (PUB) before parliament.

The Presser is expected to take place at the Kofi Drah Conference Hall, Department of Political Science, University of Ghana, Legon at 10 a.m.

UG-UTAG believes there are number of provisions in the bill that contravenes the 1992 constitution and if there’s going to be a law that contravenes the 1992 constitution then UTAG is against it.

The presser will deliberate on these issues and other pertinent ones.

This comes after recent comments made by President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, and the vice-presidential candidate of the opposition National Democratic Congress, Professor Naana Opoku-Agyemang, over the passage of the bill.

In connection with that, UG-UTAG has consented with the National Democratic Congress over its plans to withdraw the Public Universities Bill if given the nod in the December polls.

The president of UG-UTAG, Dr. Samuel Nkumban days ago vehemently declared their position which was in opposition to the Bill.

Although they share the same views on the matter as the NDC, Dr. Nkumban says that it should be assumed that they throw their weight behind the party in the 2020 general election

The bill, according to government is ostensibly for the purpose of harmonizing the laws that regulate public universities but members of UTAG have held that the bill is disguised to expand the frontiers of executive power.

Comments from the NDC

The running mate of the NDC Flagbearer, Prof. Jane Naana Opoku Agyemang has asked government to rescind its decision to pass the bill.

According to her, any form of political interference in the management of the country’s public universities will be detrimental to strides made in running the country’s tertiary institutions.
