Popular Nigerian poet and playwright, John Pepper Clark has died at the age of 85.
According to his family, the literary icon died on Tuesday, 13th October,2020 in a hospital in Lagos where he had been receiving treatment.
He was born on the 6th of April,1935 in Kiagbodo,Delta, Nigeria. He was popular in Africa and the World for his poems, “Night Rain” and “Abiku” which were compulsory reading for students of English literature across Africa at different points.
John Pepper Clarke served as a professor of English at the University of Lagos, a position from which he retired in 1980.
He was an English graduate from Nigeria’s revered University of Ibadan, where he graduated in 1960, he began his career as a journalist. He worked as a Nigerian government information officer before moving to the defunct Daily Express as a features and editorial writer, according to his biography.
He won several honors and recognition due to his literary excellence.
