The Badminton Association of Ghana (BAG) received equipment for the Badminton World Federation’s (BWF) new development project ‘Air Badminton’ on Sunday 27th September 2020.

Badminton which is an indoor sport is moving outdoor as Air Badminton is designed to create opportunities for people of all ages and ability to play badminton on hard, grass and sand surfaces in parks, gardens, streets, playgrounds and beaches around the world.

Speaking to BAG President, Evans Yeboah, about how soon we could see the equipment for the new outdoor sport he said “The air badminton will be out doored in the month of October and November and then basically the general public will be able to test and feel it as we test on grasses, on sand, in the street and also on the playground”

“It is an avenue for everybody to be able to see and participate in the sport for all ages and that will contribute to your better health, wellbeing and giving you a greater inclusivity and accessibility.”

Evans also spoke more about how this new development will affect the sport in the country saying it would help the association as it has had trouble setting up the infrastructure for the indoor game

“It is important for us because infrastructure-wise we’ve had difficulty in building badminton centers across the country. So this also provides an avenue that people can easily participate, whether it is by the sea, whether it is basically on grass or in a normal sandy environment.” Evans said

“So it fits into our development plan of expanding the sport quickly among schools and communities across the country.” He concluded

A sentiment shared by the Badminton Confederation of Africa (BCA) in a statement on the new development saying “This provides a big opportunity for Africa to excel in the game as one of our biggest challenge in most of our African countries has always been lack of infrastructure. We are extremely happy and eager to learn the new game.”
