Akufo-Addo directs Communication Minister to suspend plans on closing down GBC channels on DTT

Ghana’s President Nana Akufo-Addo has issued a directive informing the Communication Minister Ursula Owusu to suspend her plans on shutting down some channels belonging to the state broadcaster, Ghana Broadcasting Corporation on the Digital Terrestrial Television (DTT) platform.

In a press release signed by the Director of Communications at the presidency, Eugene Arhin stated that “…suspend the implementation of the directives given to the Ghana Broadcasting Corporation (GBC) in connection with the reduction of GBC’s channels on the Digital Terrestrial Television(DTT) platform, pending further consultation with stakeholders”.

Meanwhile, last week the Communications Minister said she has had several meetings with GBC on the issue of shutting down some of its channels to make way for new media outlets who wish to start their own TV channels but GBC refused hence her decision to come out publicly with her directives.
