Brazilian center-back David Luiz who was due to be out of contract at the end of the June is close to signing a new one-year deal at Arsenal.
This comes after a horror show performance which saw the former Chelsea defender make a costly defensive blunder, conceded a penalty and was sent-off, all after coming on as a substitute during Arsenal’s 3-0 defeat to Manchester City, but Arsenal Head Coach Mikel Arteta has urged the club to extend his deal earlier this month.
Following the aftermath of last week’s defeat at the Etihad Stadium, a whole host of well know figures within football have blasted Luiz’s credentials and questioned whether or not he is still capable of playing in the Premier League as a defender.
Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher who said the Brazilian should not be brought back into Arsenal’s line up under any circumstances “After a performance like that, l don’t see how Mikel Arteta can put him back in under any circumstances. It is unbelievable in some ways that he has kidded so many people in football,” he added.
Former Netherlands international Ruud Gullit also weighed in on the debate, insisting that Luiz is an “overrated player.”
“Yes, David is not doing well. I think he’s an overrated player, really. When he played in midfield I thought he was reasonable, but then there was already discussion about what he actually is as a player, but he preferred to play as a defender… Well, we all remember the match between Brazil and Germany (7-1 at the 2014 World Cup). I just can’t understand it. Most clubs have done away with him, but he keeps coming back somewhere.”
