Following the change of the entire education curriculum in Ghana, new subjects were introduced in addition to the old ones.
The change of the curriculum did not come with just the addition of new subjects. The method of teaching and learning was also amended. New topics were also introduced into old subjects. This has added responsibility to educators and learners. The educational reform started in the year 2019.
Since the reform is in its early stage, teachers and students are now adjusting to the new change. Teachers attend workshops to learn more about the new educational system. Students are also trying to pick up with the changes as they are now developing an interest in new subjects. At the look of things, it will take some more year’s for instructors and pupils to be familiar with it.
We spoke to a few students on their way home. The polls show that the new educational curriculum is stressful.
Kofi Amar: ‘ I am in class six. When the subjects were less I sometimes fail three or two because I focus on the ones I love. Now that it’s more than ten, I wonder the number I will fail.’
Benedicta: ‘The subject called Our World Our People is similar to Religious and Moral Education and it sometimes confuses me. Aside from that, I love History as a new subject.’
These are selected opinions on the topic under discussion from a basic school in the Shai Osu-Doku District in the Greater Accra Region.
