Government must support private transport operators- Kwame Agbodza

Member of Parliament for Adaklu Constituency in the Volta Region, Kwame Govern Agbodza has asked government supports private transport operators in the country.

He said that drivers are essential service providers, and are also extremely stressed.

Thus, the need for government to release funds from the relief government received.

The MP, who is also a Ranking Member on the Roads and Transport Committee of Parliament made the comments during an interview with Citi News.

He suggests that government gives some reliefs to the drivers “so they can bring down the prices”.

He also asked that no one should blame these drivers for transport fare hikes, because some have been out of business.

“They could not be blamed for the rising transport fares given the prevailing circumstances”, he added.


Oil prices saw its lowest drop since 1991 in March 2020, after Saudi Arabia started a price war with Russia by slashing its selling prices because of falling demand due to Coronavirus.

But with oil prices stabilising globally, fuel prices in Ghana have risen steadily over the past two months.

Urban transport operators reduced their passenger intake to promote social distancing but the effect of the policy directed by government was not felt as much, as fuel prices dropped to almost GHc4 per litre.
