NDC sues EC over mop-up registration

Politics0

The largest opposition NDC has filed a motion at the Accra High Court seeking an interlocutory injunction against the reopening of the 2020 voters registration.

In a writ filed at the General jurisdiction of the Accra High Court, the applicant held that the respondent(EC) has failed to meet a twenty-one days’ notice in the Gazette before the commencement of the national registration of voters per Regulation 2(3) of the Public Elections(Registration of voters) Regulation, 2016 (C.I. 91).

According to the NDC, the exercise billed for Thursday, October 1, 2020, will be in breach of the laws regarding registration exercises.

“Counsel for and on behalf of the plaintiff/applicant herein praying for an order of interlocutory injunction to restrain the defendants/respondents herein, their assigns, agents, privies and any persons acting upon their instructions or authorized by them or acting in furtherance of the same objective as theirs from taking steps to register voters on 1st October, 2020 or any date thereafter for any public election or from doing anything to overreach this court in the fair determination of the instant suit, pending the determination of this suit, on the grounds contained in the accompanying supporting affidavit,” the suit said.

The EC has set Thursday, 1st October, 2020 for the reopening of the voters register for one day.

The exercise, which will take place in all the district offices of the EC in all the regions from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m., is intended to give an opportunity to those who qualify but who, for one reason or another, were unable to register during the recently held registration exercise.

This is in fulfilment of the electoral guidelines in Ghana that stipulate that a person may vote, provided his or her name is in the certified register at least 60 days before the elections.

It is expected that the process will be completed to meet the guidelines to enable the new batch of applicants to vote in the December 2020 polls.
