The ‘Cobra’ throws in the towel

Ghana boxing legend Alfred ‘Cobra’ Kotey was pronounced dead yesterday Tuesday 30th June 2020 at a New York City hospital having suffered from a stroke.

The 52-year-old and former World Boxing Organisation (WBO) Bantamweight champion has become Ghana’s first world champion to pass away leaving behind other champions such as David ‘Poison’ Kotei, Azumah Nelson, Ike Quartey, Nana Yaw Konadu, Joshua Clottey, Joseph Agbeko, Isaac Dogboe, and Richard Commey.

In the 90s Kotey belonged to a new era of youthful and skilled boxers who were to continue the legacy of the country’s first world champion, David ‘Poison’ Kotey who opened the way in the 70s. He would become the nation’s 5th world champion after beating Puerto Rico’s Rafael Del Valle back in July 1994.

Born 3rd June 1968 in Bukom, Accra Kotey featured for Ghana in the 1988 Summer Olympics before turning professional in November that same year.

During his amateur days, he formed a deadly partnership with former World Boxing Association’s (WBA) Welterweight champion, Ike ‘Bazooka’ Quartey in the late ’80s into the ’90s.

The Cobra fought 43 times, winning 26, drawing once and losing 16 times during the entirety of his professional career.
