WGMA Cuts Sod For Cement Factory


The Greater Accra Regional Minister, Hon Ishmael Ashitey, has performed a sod cutting ceremony for the construction of a cement factory in the Weija-Gbawe municipality.

The proposed cement factory is under the One District One Factory (1D1F) flagship programme of the President, His Excellency, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo Addo.

Empire Cement Factory Limited, a Ghanaian/ Chinese partnership, is expected to be completed in twelve (12) calendar months and directly employ thirteen thousand (13,000) workers.

Speaking at the ceremony on Thursday, 11th June 2020, at Weija Junction, the site for the project, Hon Ishmael Ashitey congratulated both the investors, Empire Cement Limited, and the Municipal Assembly for the bold decision to site such a project in the municipality.

He, also, appealed to the potential employers to create an enabling environment for their employees.

The Chief of Nleshie Lafa, Nii Ayi Okufobour, said he was happy the project is being sited on his land. He, therefore, appealed to the investors to employ majority of the work force from Weija and its environs.

Nana Obokom Atta IX, a director of the Empire Cement Factory Limited, said the project is a huge one which has been in conception for six (6) years.

He said, with the availability of land now settled, the project will take off as soon as possible so that the timelines are met.

Nana Obokom Atta IX, said the factory would have the capacity to produce one million tonnes of cement annually.

He ended by promising to construct an artificial turf field for the youth in the area. This, he said, would be part of their corporate social responsibility.

In his welcome address earlier, the Municipal Chief Executive MCE of the Weija-Gbawe Municipal Assembly, Hon Patrick Kwesi Brako Kumor, thanked the Regional Minister for taking time off to be present. He, also, patted the Member of Parliament MP for the Weija-Gbawe Constituency and Deputy Minister for Health, Hon Tina Naa Ayeley Mensah, for her unflinching support at all times.

Hon Patrick Kumor (MCE), said building of the cement factory in the municipality will open her up to more economic growth.

Hon Tina Naa Ayeley Mensah (MP), said she was so happy to have the 1D1F in her constituency. She said, it is a dream come true and she will assist in every way possible to make it see the light of day.

Residents around the Weija Junction who witnessed the ceremony, expressed their happiness at the incoming project.
