Some vehicle operators in the capital city are unhappy with the move by the government to ensure that passengers pay  transport fares electronically soon.

Ghana’s Vice President, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia earlier this year stated that, Ghanaians will soon start paying for public transport services which is popularly referred to as tro-tro and other payments with the introduction of the Universal Quick Response (QR) code.

The Vice President on Tuesday August 25,2020 also reiterated that,preparation were ongoing to see the move effected soon.

This is coming at a time when the government is determined to make electronic payment an accepted mode of transaction.

In connection with this, Talksafrica.com engaged some drivers and bus conductors in the central business district of Accra to know what they make of the decision taken by the ruling government.

Kojo Kum,a “Sprinter” bus driver indicated that, the digitization will cause inconveniences in the collection of the fares in the bus.

“They should not bring this at all because it will not help us a bit,they should look for a different way of solving our problems and fix our roads”He said

Some bus conductors also made mention of the fact that this will increase the unemployment rate as most bus conductors will be out of job.

They added that,the job losses can breed social vices in Ghanaian communities.

However,According to Dr Bawumia, Ghana must take further advantage of the benefits of technology and digitisation in reaching for a major frontier of financial inclusion.
